Women in the middle ages were often thought of as inferior to men, even though they worked just as hard. Most women had a job, not including all the work around the house. Some worked in the fields or had a jobs in a workshop or were trades women. Rich widowed women took over the estates of their late husbands. In some cases women would join the knights in battle! Some examples of jobs for women in the middle ages are shopkeepers, bakers, spinners, alewives, farmers, and silk weavers. Working as a spinner was the most common for women in the middle ages. Spinners would spin the wool into thread and then weave it into cloth for clothes.1
Single female land owners had many of the same rights as men, but when a woman got married all her land and posessions were now owned by her husband. If her husband died the woman would get a third of his land. Some unmarried women would become nuns, and live a life quite like a monk's. Nuns cared for the sick and were important members of society.Single women wore their hair down but when marries they wraped their hair in a wimple as a sign of modesty.
